We're coming up on our next Planning Commission public hearing for our "mixed-use" zoning districts, and we'd like to invite all who are interested to attend. Our hearing on Wednesday, November 2nd, will focus initially on the Gateway Residential/Commercial district, which has previously been called the Gateway Commercial district and encompasses the area along the northeast side of Rt 2 from the Mobil station to the "Welcome to Richmond" sign. Some of the amendments that we will discuss also relate to the Village Residential/Commercial district, which we began a conversation about at our hearing on October 19th.
The aim of the amendments that we are proposing for the Gateway is to allow some housing in this district to help alleviate our housing shortage, while still allowing commercial uses and maintaining the scenic entrance to Richmond that contributes to our sense of rural character. We are proposing a set of multifamily housing development standards to ensure that any new multifamily housing projects are good neighbors, and we are thinking about the types of commercial uses that might be desired by Richmond residents without undermining our downtown Richmond businesses. All the details of the proposed amendments can be found on the Town website (boards and meetings – Planning Commission – Nov. 2nd meeting materials).
There will be one final public hearing on both these districts on November 16th. The Planning Commission will then discuss all the public input received and come up with a final recommendation to forward to the Selectboard for its consideration. All our hearings will be held as hybrid meetings starting at 7 PM on zoom and in-person at the Town Center.
