Attention, baseball fans and Civil War history buffs: The Green Mountain Civil War Round Table announces an in-person program, "Double-Talk on Doubleday: Why, How, and When did Abner Doubleday become the imagined inventor of American's pasttime?"
Doubleday, a Union general during the Civil War, had no connection to baseball, so why, and to what purpose, did baseball's boosters construct an origin story with him at its center?
On Saturday October 8, 2022 at 1 PM, at the Bugbee Senior Center in White River Junction, Norwich Professor Rowley Brucken will explore the founding myth of baseball's origin. Professor Brucken will consider the broader historical and social context regarding the early days of baseball in the U.S. and in VT specifically.
This program is co-sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. It is free, open to the public, and accessible to those with disabilities.
A buffet lunch will be available prior to the presentation (12:30) at a cost of $12.pp. Please note that you may want to bring a beverage--coffee, soda, juice. Reservations are required. Contact Gail Blake at auntis@comcast.net, or by phone: 802/296/2919.
