Shanta Lee Gander, artist and public intellectual, is the author of GHETTOCLAUSTROPHOBIA: A Dreamin of Mama While Trying to Speak in Woke Tongues (Diode Editions) and the forthcoming collection, Black Metamorphoses (Etruscan Press). One of her ongoing projects is the exploration of Lucy Terry Prince (c. 1730 – 1821), the first known African American poet, which is the focus of Jay Craven's film production, Lost Nation. Gander teaches at The Putney School, is a producer and reporter for Vermont Public Radio, and is a regular contributor to Art New England and Ms. Magazine. Her photography exhibition, Dark Goddess: An Exploration of the Sacred Feminine is on view at the Fleming Museum of Art and will expand to include more research and multimedia aspects in spring 2022. Gander endeavors to explore the human experience by asking difficult and uncomfortable questions to dive beneath the surface of life.
