A Welsh themed service of Evening Prayer will be held at St. John's church, East Poultney, on June 21 at 4 p.m..
As part of a full summer of Saturday services with music the Reverend Christopher David, pastor at Trinity Church,Rutland, wil officiate. James Cassarino, will play Welsh music on the 1840s hand-pumped organ. Built by Vermonter William Nutting the organ has a sweet sound and will be played before and after the service. Attendees will have the opportunity to sing or hear Welsh hymns and sections of the Welsh liturgy
Rev. David and Cassarino are well qualified to conduct this service as David is a native Welshman and Cassarino, as Music Director at Green Mountain College, has shepherded the college choir on several trips to Wales. Due to the slate in Wales and the Poultney/ FairHaven area many local folk are descendants of Welsh immigrants who came to work the quarries. These towns are full of Thomases, Williamses and Joneses.
As the church is unchanged from its raising on in the 1830s it will be a extraordinary experience for all attending and occupying the gated, boxed pews.
Light refreshments to be served on the lawn after the service.
