Historical Society’s second inaugural meeting
-- a historic event with a fascinating speaker
Shelburne Historical Society will hold its second inaugural meeting on Saturday, June 7. Most organizations only have one inaugural meeting – but SHS wanted to make it easy for anyone who is interested in the re-energized historical society to attend and join in the fun. So they held a meeting on May 20 and are repeating the program Saturday morning for those who would find a weekend morning easier than a Tuesday evening. And anyone who was at the first meeting, and would like to hear the guest speaker and discussion of future programs again, is welcome to attend.
The June 7 meeting, at the Shelburne Town Hall at 9:30 a.m., will be an opportunity for everyone in town to become part of the society (since they are all part of the history), and to learn about a Shelburne woman who played an important part in the history of Shelburne and America.
Julie Eldridge Edwards, Curator of Collections at Shelburne Farms, will be the featured speaker, sharing the story of Aileen Osborn Webb, whose recognition of the importance of crafts, based on her own love of making pottery, wood sculpting and painting, led her to play a key role in the founding of the Shelburne Craft School, and on a national stage, the founding of the American Craft Council.
David Webster, whose father Truman Webster wrote many newspaper columns and a book on Shelburne history, will share some historical highlights, Dorothea Penar will lead a discussion encouraging everyone present to contribute ideas for future meetings of the SHS, and Judy Frazer will explain the benefits of membership in the newly activated organization.
A special feature of Saturday’s meeting will be a tour of Shelburne Craft School, led by the Craft School’s Executive Director Sage Tucker-Ketcham.
