Travelogue: A Journey to Morocco

Mar 6, 2025, 1:30 to 2:30 PM

Ray Desilets will tell us about the trip he and his wife, Jeanne, took recently to Morocco. He'll tell us some of the facts about the climate and geology as he takes us from the western coastal region, across the Atlas Mountains and into the Sahara. The trip will start in Casablanca, go north-east to Rabat, the capital city with roots in the 12th century and east to Fes, considered the spiritual and cultural capital. Then we'll head south to Erfoud, an oasis town in the Sahara and to Merzoug, a small town near some of the tallest sand dunes in the Sahara. Ray will tell us about one of the highlights of the tour—a camel ride in the desert.

From the Sahara, we'll go west to Ouarzazate, known as "Africa's Hollywood" for its incredible scenery and to Marrakesh which is an old fortified city with its medina quarter which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains a large number of souks (markets), the Kutubiyya Mosque, and many other historic and cultural sites. Finally, we'll travel north back to Casablanca.

We'll see a lot of pictures illustrating the differences in the landscape and lifestyles between affluent city life and nomadic peoples.

Sponsored by the Community Senior Center and free and open to all. Hope to see you there!
