June 6th--South Hero Historical Society Program--Do You Know Your Tools? 6:30p.m.-8p.m.

The next SHHS Program will take place at the Tool Museum at Apple Island Resort off Route 2 by the sandbar in the big red barn. Parking is on the grass to the right of the Museum Sign or in the paved parking parallel to Route 2. Someone will be there to assist you with parking.

We have heard from many of you that you have been wanting to get over there and see the Tool Museum, so now is your chance. At 6:30p.m., we will have a free exploration "Open House" portion of the meeting where some South Hero residents with experience in certain categories will be assisting with the various categories of tools, like construction, agricultural, apples, tinsmith, blacksmith, spinning, bee keeping and more. Ted Ingrahm, proprietor, will introduce us to the collection and do a demonstration with some tools. Patsy and Steve Robinson will be sharing their knowledge of some of the old, old tools that they remember being used on the Robinson farm, or that are still used today! Malcolm Allen will be there to help with the “Guess the Mystery Tool” part of the program and share stories of his expertise with using and designing tools to improve what he could do with his tow truck.

The Arnold Zlotoff Tool Museum collection includes 3,000 pieces originating from the colonial period in the Northeastern United States. The collection encompasses a vast variety of trades, industries, and applications. It was effectively the result of the passion of one man, Arnold Zlotoff. Arnold was a New York City school teacher of Industrial Arts and a skilled mechanic, thereby developing his interest in tools. He was impressed by the craftsmanship of the early Americans, many of whom fashioned tools themselves or collaborated with local blacksmiths, who would serve as tool makers. He began collecting in the late 1940s and continued into the 1980s. His family purchased the barn at Apple Island Resort which is now home to his collection.

Please join us on Friday, June 6th at 6:30 for some free exploration time and at 7:00 or so for our program.

The tool museum is open every Saturday, Memorial Day to Columbus Day, 10:00 am-4:00 pm, free admission. Here is their website http://www.arnoldzlotofftoolmuseum.com/
