Please Join Us! The Positive Youth Sports Alliance of Essex (PYSA) is proud to present “An Evening With Travis Roy: Achieving Dreams Through Goals, Love, Pride, and Respect,” on Tuesday, June 3, from 6:30-8:00p.m. at the Essex Cinemas. The event will also feature the presentations of the 2013 Friend and Coach of the Year Awards.
This event features Travis Roy, Division I hockey scholar at Boston University, author of Eleven Seconds, founder of The Travis Roy Foundation, motivational speaker, and activist. He will be discussing the importance of establishing core values, and how setting goals, love, pride, peer pressure, and respect helped him achieve his dreams.
Roy achieved his dreams when in 1995 he earned a hockey scholarship to Division I hockey powerhouse, Boston University. Playing in his first collegiate game at the age of 20, his life changed forever in the first 11 seconds, when Roy crashed into the boards and became paralyzed from the neck down. Roy has since graduated from Boston University, written an autobiography, and formed a foundation to support spinal cord injury research and provide grants to survivors to lead active and independent lives. Roy is a popular motivational speaker who is known to help his audience members reflect on what is most important to them, and inspire them to get the most out of life.
The event will also feature the presentations of the 2013 Friend and Coach of the Year Awards. This year’s Coach of the Year finalists includes Dan Forcier (Essex Youth Hockey Association), Heather Garrow (Essex High School Field Hockey), and Dave Neil (Essex High School Football & Lacrosse). The Friend of the Year finalists includes Patty & Nick Kent (parent supporters) and Adam Weiss (high school teacher).
The event is free and no pre-registration is required. Seating is on a first come, first served basis and is limited. For more information, visit www.pysaessex.org.
