Bears are starting to come out of their winter dens and reports of sightings are popping up on Front Porch Forum every day!
To help us better understand our ursine neighbors, please join the MRV Community Black Bear Initiative for an engaging presentation by Vermont Fish and Wildlife biologist, Jaclyn Comeau. Jaclyn will introduce general information about bear ecology and behavior with a focus on their life cycle and food needs. Her presentation will explore conflicts between people and bears, diving deeper into what draws them into our backyards and what we can do to prevent this from happening. We hope this presentation will increase our MRV community's understanding of black bears and help us all take steps to be active stewards of this iconic species. This Zoom presentation is free and open to the public.
What is the MRV Community Black Bear Initiative?
The Fayston, Waitsfield and Warren Conservation Commissions, Moretown Recreation Committee, Friends of the Mad River, Stark Mountain Foundation and Sugarbush Resort's SEW Committee have formed a committee of volunteers to help address the growing black bear concerns the Mad River Valley has been experiencing over the last few years. Though still in the early stages of planning, the Initiative hopes to develop a centralized web-based education and resource center for the MRV community to learn about black bears in Vermont, develop a community bear ethos about how to live with and protect bears, and increase the community's understanding of how human actions impact and affect bear behavior. Several other presentations are planned over the next few months.
