This month, as part of our educational effort, we are delighted to have a presentation by Heather Simons, the first woman Executive Director of the Vermont Police Academy. It is an opportunity for our community to learn more about the training that recruits received at Vermont Policy Academy. Among the topics Director Simons will discuss is her vision for the Academy's training program to become trauma informed. Her presentation will begin around 745pm. Feel free to submit questions (via zoom) in response to her talk.
In addition to Director Simons' presentation, Commissioners will take up the following 2 items at our meeting.
1. First, the Commission is reviewing several Department policies and directives. The first we will work on, with public input, is department directives related to interacting with persons with diminished capacities and persons with disabilities. The CNA report, which provided a functional analysis of BPD as well as alternatives to policing, recommended several changes in these policies. In addition, the Commission would like to engage the community and experts to provide input. At our meeting, we will get an update on the timeline and structural of the process to revise these policies.
2. Second, we will hear from Commission members who are working with the City Council's Public Safety Committee to review all of the recommendations from the CNA report and determine how to implement those recommendations.
