SAVE THE DATE!

On Tuesday, May 27th at 7:00 pm at the Warren United Church, the renowned Scrag Mountain Music will be having another Very Open Rehearsal, which is free and open to the public. What better way to celebrate spring! Hope to see you there!

Scrag Mountain Music, directed by double bassist Evan Premo and soprano Mary Bonhag, concludes its 2013-14 season with a characteristically adventurous, warm-hearted, virtuosic program for which the ensemble has become well-known. Schubert's effervescent “Trout Quintet” for piano and strings, composed in 1819 when Schubert was just 22, will share the program with composer-in-residence Lembit Beecher’s Looking at Spring: Meditations on Aging for soprano and chamber ensemble.

The program will be presented three times in three intimate venues favored by the Scrag Mountain Music. The final step in the creative process will take place on Tuesday, May 27, at 7:00 pm in the Emma Ford Room at the Warren United Church. This will be one of Scrag Mountain Music’s signature events, the Very Open Rehearsal, at which the performers and composer will solicit input from the audience as they put the finishing touches on the piece. The Warren Library co-hosts this event with the church. Refreshments and coffee will be served.

The performers include, in addition to Premo and Bonhag, violinist Owen Dalby, violist Meena Bhasin, cellist Karen Ouzounian, and pianist Gregory Deturck. Though all the pieces on the concert are works by young composers (Lembit Beecher is 34), and performed by musicians in their 20s and 30s, the tone of the program is both exuberant and introspective.

In fact, Beecher’s songs for soprano and chamber ensemble Looking at Spring explores the perspective of old age, a subject to which the composer is especially drawn.

“The perspective of old age becomes a magnifying glass,” says Beecher, “revealing humor, truth and emotional richness behind the daily rituals and mundane objects that fill our lives."
