Revisiting FamilySearch.org, the World's Largest, Free Genealogical Database

The December meeting of the Windham County Genealogy Interest Group will be held via Zoom on Saturday, December 4, at 10 AM. It is free and open to the public.

Register for the meeting at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0tfuqhqDoqGNzoJYYS61SG3C8zZBhi6l1C

The session will cover the world's largest, free genealogical database, FamilySearch, which has over eight billion records searchable by name and the world's largest shared family tree. In terms of volume, FamilySearch has about ten times the contents of U.S. academic research libraries. All of this is available to anyone who signs up for a free account.

Because of its large size, there are many ways to search for information on the website. It is possible to search for records, images, family tree, genealogies, catalog, and books. There is also a research wiki to help narrow the search.

Presenters Wayne Blanchard genealogy assistance volunteer at Rockingham Public Library and Jerry Carbone of Whetstone Brook Genealogy will discuss ways to find useful information about ancestors that can add to a family history. They will focus on using the catalog to find the most helpful database, and searching the crowd sourced family tree to find reliable sources on specific people.

The Windham County (VT.) Genealogy Interest Group is an informal organization whose members are dedicated to genealogy education, research, and best practices. Meetings are held every other month on Zoom. Membership is free.
