In "Picky Eater," Julia Alvarez recalls a story that she says her husband likes likes to tell a lot--about the one time she invited him over for dinner before they were married. She served "salad with bottled dressing and a side plate of fried onions and tofu squired with chili sauce…I am always aggrieved that he forgets the dinner rolls, which I bought at the Grand Union bakery…"
The first meal Julia Child cooked for her husband was brains simmered in red wine, a first attempt remembered as "not altogether successful."
Fear not: People who come to Monday Munch at the Charlotte Senior Center will get neither brains nor a tofu and chili sauce concoction.
Come in on Monday November 8 for a great delight. Kelbasa, that staple of Polish cuisine, teams up with Great Northern Beans, first developed by South American Indian farmers and cornbread whose major ingredient was first domesticated from a wild grain several thousand years ago by Aztec and Mayan Indians in Mexico and Central America.
Menu:
• North Woods Bean Soup with Kelbasa
• Cornbread
• Gingerbread Cupcakes with Lemon Frosting
Monday Munch is served from 11:30 to 12:30. Take-out meals are available. A $5 donation is appreciated.
