VSC Borders Inside & Outside: Poets on Crafting Roots

Vermont Studio Center presents Borders Inside and Outside: Poets on Crafting Roots (Routes) -- a poetry panel reading and discussion with poets, Cynthia Dewi Oka, Jake Skeets, and Vanessa Angélica Villarreal who will read and be in conversation together. This event is free and open to the public.

Cynthia Dewi Oka is the author of Fire Is Not a Country (Northwestern University Press, 2021), Salvage (Northwestern University Press, 2017), and Nomad of Salt and Hard Water (Thread Makes Blanket, 2016). The recipient of the Tupelo Quarterly Poetry Prize and the Leeway Transformation Award, her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, POETRY, Academy of American Poets, The Rumpus, PANK, Guernica, ESPNW, Hyperallergic, and elsewhere. She has taught creative writing at Bryn Mawr College and is a 2021-2022 Poet in Residence at the Amy Clampitt House in Lenox, MA. She is originally from Bali, Indonesia.

Jake Skeets is the author of Eyes Bottle Dark with a Mouthful of Flowers, winner of the National Poetry Series, American Book Award, and Kate Tufts Discovery Award. He is the recipient of a 92Y Discovery Prize, a Mellon Projecting All Voices Fellowship, and a Whiting Award. He is from the Navajo Nation and teaches at Diné College.

Vanessa Angélica Villarreal was born in the Rio Grande Valley to Mexican immigrants. She is the author of the award-winning collection Beast Meridian (Noemi Press, Akrilica Series 2017), recipient of a 2019 Whiting Award, a Kate Tufts Discovery Award nomination, and winner of the John A. Robertson Award for Best First Book of Poetry from the Texas Institute of Letters. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Harpers Bazaar, Oxford American, POETRY, and elsewhere. She is a recipient of a 2021 National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship and a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where she is working on a poetry and nonfiction collection while raising her son. Her essay collection, CHUECA, is forthcoming from Tiny Reparations Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in 2023.
