Rob Hitzig is a self-taught artist whose work evolved out of a furniture making hobby he nurtured while working for the US EPA in Washington, DC. He found that as his skills advanced he was more interested in making art with wood than in making functional pieces. Eventually, he decided to quit his job and move to Vermont in order to explore his aesthetic vision full-time. While his inspiration and goals have changed enormously over time, he has consistently been fascinated the depth and visual texture he can create using a shellac-based fine finishing technique called "French polish." It is famous for its unparalleled beauty with wood but, as Rob has found, when used with acrylic paintings it can allow a viewer to see multiple layers simultaneously, giving the effect of seeing three dimensions on a two-dimensional surface. Conceptually, his work has consistently been focused on using abstract art to create visual questions because he believes that the ambiguity can be a gateway to opening minds, which is one of the highest accomplishments art can provide society.
This exhibition will be on view in the Red Mill Gallery from 7/1 - 8/13.
