MORE INFORMATION:

With schools finalizing re-opening plans for fall 2020, most with some amount of live instruction, many are concerned about transportation implications. It will be important to encourage as much walking and bicycling to school as is safe and possible, including walking "school buses" and remote drop-off locations. There are many benefits:

— Reduce traffic congestion that may arise from parents being concerned about children riding school buses
— Ease bottlenecks at the beginning of the school day and reduce lost instructional time
— Increase physical activity time for students, which improves health and academic outcomes, and reduces disciplinary referrals

Presenter Mark Fenton, nationally recognized expert on the intersection of walking, transportation, and public health in the U.S., will offer critical insights and recommendations for your fall back-to-school transportation planning:

— Successful Safe Routes to School (SRTS) strategies to encourage walking and bicycling
— Promising low-cost demonstration and "quick-build" techniques that communities are using to accommodate increased pedestrian and bicycle demand
— Specifically applying these to routes to schools and everyday destinations
— Tips on utilizing free Local Motion and VT State DOT resources and technical assistance to improve active routes to school
