On Saturday, July 25th a white woman screamed in a Black woman's face, "Black lives don't fucking matter," on the steps of Vermont's State House. At the same event, a white man in a MAGA hat calmly and smugly told a Black man that, "what makes America great for me as a white guy isn't for you." The backdrop of these interactions included white men with guns on their hips chanting "Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum, I smell the blood of liberal scum," a white woman shoving and calling a 15 year old white ally a "stupid bitch," and a crowd chanting "USA" in response to Black Lives Matter. WCAX and other media outlets have represented these actions as "a peaceful rally to support law enforcement." This Saturday, all Vermonters of good will MUST respond. We must gather on our State House lawn and send the unequivocal message to the Black people who were attacked last weekend that we see you. We hear you. And we stand with you. We will no longer look the other way when we see hate. We will no longer allow our media to hide behind false narratives of neutrality. We must come together to build a state, nation and globe where Black voices are heard and Black life is valued and celebrated. Join us.
