On June 23rd, the legal voters of the Town of Alburgh will be asked to vote to approve two articles. The school budget is being re-voted and the Town is asking to approve a previously voted amount to be included in the budget.
The school budget that is being voted on is 6,680,217 which is the amount the school board has determined to be necessary for the ensuing fiscal year? It is estimated that this proposed budget, if approved, will result in education spending of $18,361 per equalized pupil. This projected spending per equalized pupil is 5.5 % higher than spending for the current year.
The Town is asking that $75,000, previously (2019) approved by a vote of the people, be approved, and included in the 2020/2021 budget. This amount was approved in 2019 to be included in the budget each year but was mistakenly left out of the 2020/2021 budget when written. This amount is for the Fire Department to establish an annual reserve fund for future purchases. The Selectboard is asking for permission to include this in the budget.
There will be an informational meeting on June 22nd, 2020 starting at 6pm and will be held at the Alburgh Community Educational Center. This meeting will not look like other meetings due to the Corona virus. This meeting will be held in accordance with standards set forth by Governor Scott. It is possible that the meeting will take place outside in the parking lot of the school in order to stay socially distanced and conform to the standards that have been issued from the State.
Voting will take place on June 23rd starting at 7am and continue through 7pm but will also not be done in the same manner as the past. Voters will be asked to call and request a ballot and one will be mailed to them, as is done with early/absentee voting. For those that prefer to come to the polls to vote, ballots will be issued at a drive thru polling area. Voters will be checked against the checklist, given a ballot at the beginning of the line and will be asked to again confirm their name on the checklist and will then deposit their ballots into a ballot box at the end of the line. This is a method that has been approved by Secretary of State Jim Condos.
We ask for your patience and understanding of the strange yet necessary methods that we are using to be sure that every vote will count. A sample ballot and warning can be found on the town website: www.alburghvt.org
