What has it meant to you to be "stuck" at home?
Hundreds of thousands of Americans do not have the luxury of taking these feelings for granted. On any given night when Brattleboro's Seasonal Overflow Shelter is closed (May - October), 40 or more of our neighbors are sleeping outside. Without a place to call home or adequate daytime shelter.
Last May, 40 campers slept out on the Brattleboro Common in solidarity with our neighbors experiencing homelessness. With the uncertainty around COVID-19 and Groundworks' commitment to practice social distancing, our 8th annual Camp for a Common Cause will be a virtual event this year.
We'll sleep out on May 1 (May Day!), in locations all over Windham County and beyond as we come together around this important cause. We will not be gathering on the Brattleboro Common as usual. Rather we're asking you to camp out in a location of your choice!
Here's how it works:
1. REGISTER as an individual Camper or as a Team HERE: https://groundworks.rallybound.org/Camp2020
2. Set a fundraising goal. Consider increasing your goal over last year or setting an ambitious goal like $1,000! We need your help now more than ever and all contributions are "enough" and greatly appreciated! There is no fundraising minimum and all contributions are "enough" and much appreciated!
3. Ask your networks of friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, etc to support you with a contribution. 100% of funds raised go right into conducting our important shelter and housing support work!
4. Post photos or video on social media of where you will be sleeping out and tag them: #Camp2020GWC
5. Send photos and videos to us of where you'll be sleeping out and we will post them on our Facebook page. Email your photos and video to lbennett@GroundworksVT.org and we'll post them for you!
6. Please continue to fundraise as much as possible to support our vital shelter and housing support work! When you register, we'll send you a toolkit of resources to make sharing your fundraising page easy!
~Email everyone in your contact list asking for a gift to support your campout!
~Share your fundraising page and photos on social media!
~Text your campsite photo and fundraising link to friends and family while you're camping out or in advance and ask them to chip in a contribution to help you meet your goal!
~ Get creative! It's all for a critically important cause!
Ready to get outside?
We envision you sleeping out in your yard, on your balcony, in your garage, or wherever makes the most sense to you and your teammates!
Unlike our typical restrictions when holding our campout on the town Common, NOW YOU CAN …
… have a campfire if you want!
… choose your own tunes and what's for dinner!
… sleep as late as you want in the morning!
In our best year, Camp for a Common Cause raised over $25,000 to support our services providing shelter and case management to help our neighbors experiencing homelessness to find and maintain stable housing. This year, reaching our goal means more than ever. You can help us mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on our ability to continue to meet this mission one person or family at a time.
