The Town of Johnson is hosting the Vermont Human Rights Commission to conduct a training on implicit and explicit biases, bystander intervention, and micro-aggressions. The meeting is free and open to all members of the public.
Johnson residents have taken a stand against racism, bigotry, and discrimination of all kinds. We have articulated our views in our community's inclusivity statement. We also understand that this is an ongoing process, and we must always strive to be better.
Our next step in this journey is to work to understand ourselves and our decision making. So, we will work with the Human Rights Commission and will be conducting an Implicit and Explicit Bias Training for the Town of Johnson. Come learn how to be an advocate and effective bystander in the face of discrimination and how to cultivate a more inclusive and welcoming climate. The training also explores how we unconsciously attribute certain qualities and characteristics to members of a particular race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc. We will discuss how these associations are formed, the impact they have on our behavior, and how we unconsciously evaluate others despite our best intentions. The training will challenge us to face our own biases and give us the tools to change them.
