Brenda Garand will be showing at Vermont Studio Center in the Red Mill Gallery from March 1 to March 26, 2020, with a closing reception on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, 3 to 5pm.
Brenda Garand is a sculptor born in Peterborough, New Hampshire. She grew up in Hancock, NH, and has also lived in Paris and New York City. Garand received her MFA in Sculpture from Queens College, City University of New York and her BFA in Sculpture from the University of New Hampshire. She currently lives in Vermont and is a professor of studio art at Dartmouth College. The sense of place makes frequent appearances in Garand’s work. Vermont, New Hampshire, and Québec are regions that she typically culls from, along with her own heritage of French Canadian, Abenaki, and English.
Referring to her process and choice of materials, Brenda states, “Materials hold great significance: whether it is cold rolled steel, wool from the Johnson Woolen Mills, quills from the eastern porcupine, walnut ink I make, or black felt paper reminiscent of days worked roofing with my father. I believe that the visual recording of a moment in time is analogous to the oral tradition of history: both are interpretations of events.”
Recently, Brenda developed a mysterious illness that resulted in losing her ability to speak or articulate words that can be understood by other people. The new work on view in the Red Mill Gallery will be drawings that the artist has never before shown that deal with this disability.
Please stop by during the month to check out her drawings, and/or join us for a closing reception on March 25, from 3 to 5 PM.
The Red Mill Gallery is located in the main meeting building on the VSC campus on Pearl Street in Johnson, Vermont. Shows in this gallery are rotating.
