January Update from the Farm:
The cloud layer hangs heavy this morning, casting the valley in shades of gray. Jays cry out from high in the treetops as the steady wind creeks and moans through the bare branches. Strangely mild as it has been, the sheep flock was able to continue grazing on the sugar-rich oats planted and kindly shared by Justin Rich on Ken Pillsbury's old field, just before the Shaker Mountain bridge. Just a week and a half ago, heads lowered to the North Wind, we walked them back to the barn where they will spend the winter, next to the graveyard across from Trapp Road. A dozen ewes are due to give birth to their lambs starting on April Fools Day. The ewes seem fat and healthy and ready for the work ahead of them. For many this will mean nursing twin lambs, a heavy demand on their reserves built up over these winter months.
The January Feast offered some notable highlights. Chef Luke worked his magic, grilling the beef to pink perfection on hardwood coals in front of the Hall. Dancers of all ages learned to 'honor their partner' while the official Feast band, 'The Town Hallers,' fiddled and picked and strummed. Ted Sargeant, 92 years old and having seen some dances in his day, nodded in approval. There were some big toothy grins to be seen that fine evening.
To begin a list of the small and large gifts that breathe life into the Brush Brook Community Farm and the Gratitude Feasts would be an exercise in surely-leaving-someone-unacknowledged. The Feasts are where these gifts are passed on. And a list doesn't really give a feel for the thing...much more web-like, relational, rooted and alive. Instead, I will say that it is deeply honoring to work alongside so many fine and caring people in service to this place. Gratitude gathers and spills over in the Feast Hall of my days.
Many thanks, Adam Wilson
