Are you looking for a way to get exercise or beat the winter blues this winter? Try contra dancing! Your local community contra dance is the 2nd Tuesday of every month at the beautiful Stone Church, 210 Main Street in Brattleboro. No partner is needed. Beginners are welcome; all dances are taught and called. If you're new to contra dancing, come at 7:00 for a brief intro lesson.
Contra dance this month to spellbinding fiddler Emerald Rae, rad roots guitarist Peter Siegel and double-bass wizard Stuart Kenney, with caller Kristen Planeaux. Tuesday, January 14th from 7-10pm. To protect the dance floor, please carry in clean, soft-soled shoes. Adults $10-12, college students $8, youth $5.
Contra dance is a social dance dating back to the 1700s. It is similar to square dancing, but danced in long lines instead of squares. It is enjoyed by all ages. Contra dances are held all over the US. The music may have its roots in Celtic, Quebecois, New England Old Time, and Appalacian, sometimes with modern jazz or swing influences. Some of the best musicians and callers in the country are from our town and region, and again this month we are lucky to have some of the best.
See you on the dance floor!
