This Saturday, December 7, at 7:30 pm, Mad River Chorale will perform a stirring holiday concert at the Waitsfield United Church. There will be a second performance on Sunday December 8 at 3:00 pm, at the Waterbury Congregational Church.
Conductor Mary Jane Austin will lead the group of about fifty exuberant singers in a varied program accompanied by a wind ensemble including two bassoons, two flutes, oboe and French horn and four-hands piano.
The featured piece is the well loved "Laud to the Nativity," a musical composition by Ottorino Respighi told from the point of view of the humble shepherds. Professional soloists, Sarah Cullins, Adam Hall and Wendy Hoffman Farrell further amplify the mystery and magnitude of the story with words written in the 13th century by a Franciscan monk, set to music written in the early 20th century but honoring musical ideas from Italy of the past.
Rounding out the program is music by favorite 19th and 20th century composers and arrangers Anton Bruckner, John Rutter, and Linda Spevacek. The audience will be warmly invited to join the singers in some familiar carols and finish by joining in the chorale's traditional rendition of "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah.
