From 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Sunday, November 3, Chittenden County Forester, Ethan Tapper will lead a walk in the Hinesburg Town Forest to discuss forest management and show which trees will soon be harvested. All are invited. Wear clothing and footwear suitable for whatever the conditions are that day. Meet at the Economou Road trailhead.
In order to increase species and structural diversity, increase the resiliency of the forest, improve wildlife habitat, capture value in mature and declining trees, and reduce stem density harvesting of trees in the Hinesburg Town Forest started last winter and will continue this winter.
This harvesting is overseen by Chittenden County Forester, Ethan Tapper, who will be using the harvesting, as prescribed in The Inventory and Assessment of the Hinesburg Town Forest, to demonstrate responsible forest management. The harvest has been marked by Tapper and has been and will be cut by Hinesburg logger Tim Brown. The Inventory and Assessment of the Hinesburg Town Forest, was prepared by Harris Roen of Longmeadow Resource Management and was approved as an addendum to the Hinesburg Town Forest Management Plan by the Selectboard this year.
This is a great opportunity to learn about the threats to forest health and current responsible forest management, as it is being applied in the Hinesburg Town Forest.
