On October 6, the Trump administration announced it was pulling US troops out of northern Syria, essentially giving Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a green light to invade Rojava, carry out ethnic cleansing, and forcibly resettle the area. Since 2012, the autonomous region of Rojava has hosted an inspiring multi-ethnic experiment in self-determination and women's autonomy, all while fighting the Islamic State (ISIS) and successfully liberating all of the territory that ISIS had occupied.

On October 9, the Turkish military began an invasion of Rojava. So far 235 people are confirmed to have been killed, including an attack that killed several journalists and prompted international journalists to leave the area. Now, there is increasingly less documentation and awareness of the atrocities currently being committed by the Turkish military, including roadside execution of handcuffed civilians, bombing children with chemical weapons, and airstrikes on hospitals (even after the so-called ceasefire). One way to help support medical and humanitarian services on the ground is to donate to the Kurdish Red Crescent. Last week, most of the international NGO's including Doctors without Borders left the region, and so the KRC is handling much of the burden of supporting the 677 injured and 250,000 displaced so far.

"The Rojava revolution is a women's revolution and it's everyone's revolution. Everyone should be concerned about what's happening here because what is threatened is the possibility to live a free life, a democratic and communal life, with grassroots, feminist, and ecological principles."
