Dear Neighbors,
All I can say is WOW and THANK YOU! The Ward 6 NPA Meeting and Community Dinner this evening was attended by over 100 Ward 6 residents. The agenda included the Brookfield team, Superintendent Yaw Obeng and Mayor Weinberger. Many thanks to all who attended and a shout out to the Ward 6 NPA Steering Committee for all their efforts.
For anyone who was unable to attend the NPA meeting, Channel 17 was there taping the meeting which will be available online in a few days. Also, minutes were taken and will be available through the NPA.
This coming Monday, the City Council will hold its first of two meetings in the month of September. We will begin our meeting at 7pm.
Following a presentation from Burlington Electric and consultants from Synapse Energy Economics and Resource Systems Group on Burlington's Net Zero Energy Roadmap and the appointment of a new Assistant City Attorney, we have seven remaining items on our deliberative agenda:
• We will have a presentation from Burlington School Superintendent Yaw Obeng on the 2018-2019 Year in Review.
• A resolution to authorize initiating proceedings for the Shelburne Street Roundabout Project as the next step in the project's progress. As I mentioned in my last blue newsletter you received in June, this Vermont Agency of Transportation project is continuing toward construction. After over a year of working with abutting property owners, the Council must do a site visit and necessity hearing of the remaining property owners to move forward with the process of monetary damages as the State has worked with all property owners involved.
• Two proposed ordinance changes, one involving the accumulation of garbage, trash and abandoned vehicles and furniture, the other involving building construction fees and exceptions.
• We have three Council-initiative resolutions all relating to the Climate Crisis our planet is experiencing and one we must address. The first, which I am cosponsoring, is regarding the City's Climate Change initiatives and the expansion of the City's tree planting program. The second is regarding the consideration of climate impacts by the Department of Public Works and the last resolution is declaring a climate emergency an initiating a just transition for City staff.
Please keep in mind that you are always welcome to come to a Council meeting and speak on any topic you wish during public forum. This begins at a time certain of 7:30pm at every Council meeting. You may access the Council agenda at http://www.boarddocs.com/vt/burlingtonvt/Board.nsf/Public Please note that all Council meetings are televised live on BT Channel 317 and streamed live to your computer or phone. Please go to youtube and type in "Burlington City Council meetings" and the live stream will come up.
As always, I welcome your questions and concerns. I hope you are enjoying these waning summer days and the beginning hints of fall.
My best,
Karen
