Centuries of History and Cooperation between Catholic and Protestant Churches in South Hero.
The South Hero Historical Society will meet at Folsom Ed Center April 4 at 7:00pm . Alice Toth and fellow parishioners will tell of the founding of St Rose of Lima in 1877 and early church documents translated from French by Cecile Reus. They will also share more recent activities such as their famous tea, pig roast, and recent renovations.
The South Hero Congregational Church was founded in 1795. Guy Winch will tell how the fellowship hall was excavated and built by hand. Allen Kinney will tell of the many activities of the youth group with the guidance of their first woman minister, Rev. Horsman. There will be photos of other ministers, such as O.G. Wheeler, who planted the So St maple trees; Rev. Reader, who guided us to rebuild after the fire; Rev. Knapp, who raised our music to a higher level; Rev. Fladd, who energized our social consciousness to many actions which made a difference in our community and the world. We must acknowledge Max Reader, Richard Crocker, and Father Brennan, who because of their personal friendships, forged an ecumenical awareness between the churches that lives in the hearts of the parishioners to this day.
So come and share your stories of fish fries, community suppers, Sunday breakfasts, Christmas baskets, Food For Thought, and the donation of church space for CIDER functions.
The SHHS invites all to join. Dues are $10 yearly. Everyone, children and adults, residents and non-residents, members and non members are welcome at our monthly meetings.
