Building Low Tunnels to Extend the Garden Season

Past event
Aug 16, 2019, 2 to 4 PM

Low tunnels are the contemporary version of the "cold boxes," made out of windows and wood frames, which have been used for years to start plants early in the season. They are also every bit as good for extending your season well into the fall and early winter – even in Vermont. If you'd like to learn how to build a low tunnel, the University of Vermont Extension Master Gardener Program is offering a free hands-on workshop on Aug. 16 at the Yellow Barn Community Garden in Arlington. Participants will construct a simple 4' x 10' low tunnel with materials available at local hardware or home improvement stores. Discussion will include maintenance and tips for use, such as basic venting techniques, alternative materials, and the use of low tunnels for insect and disease protection. The Yellow Barn Community Garden is located at 234 Route 313 West in Arlington, VT. For information and to sign up contact Dottie Sundquist at 802-688-4707; dotsun53@gmail.com.
