Gary Moore, teacher, poet, performer, and playwright, Dean Emeritus of the Vermont College of Fine Arts, will be giving a dramatic reading of his newly published historical-fictive novel, "Abe & Ann," at The VCA Library (also known as the Gary Library!) right next to Noble Hall on College St. at 7:30 tomorrow evening, Sunday 8/11/19.
Gary has published two chapbooks of poems with a third, "Heavenly Bodies," to come out later this year. His plays, "Long Lankin's Curse" and "Beaver Falls" packed Lost Nation Theater.
In 1988 he went to China as an exchange professor for Johnson State College and while there, wrote, directed, and performed with Chinese students in his rap opera, "The Great Emancipator Meets the Monkey King." It was the first time ever that rap music had been performed publicly in the People's Republic of China, and its call to freedom came only months before the Tiananmen student revolt of 1989.
On his return he wrote of his experience in "Burning in China," which was first performed in Montpelier, moving on to sell-out audiences in New York City.
Now, after 50 years studying the life of Abraham Lincoln, he has written of young Lincoln's historically acknowledged but barely known and tragically unrequited love affair with Ann Rutledge. "Abe & Ann" has received widespread acclaim and will be on sale with author signings Sunday night.
But anyone who has seen Moore perform knows that this will be no ordinary reading. Gary LIVES his works, and will be accompanied by longtime friend Fred Wilbur, who will sing "The Ballad of Abe & Ann."
This beautiful novel and its extraordinary author bring to life the love story you never knew, that broke the heart of one of our greatest American heroes.
Don't miss it! It will be an unforgettable evening.
