Monitoring Monarchs

Wednesday, July 17
7 pm at BEEC
Free, donations welcome

Insects are the foundation of our ecosystems and they are in trouble. Spend an evening looking for and learning about one of the best known of these, the monarch butterfly, with local game warden Kelly Price. We will look for monarchs in all stages of life, learn about their astonishing migration, and discuss how to manage your property for monarchs and other Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), and prepare you to participate in the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz, from July 27 – August 4.

Kelly Price spends his downtime studying insects. For fun, he rears the larva of our local butterflies and moths and brings pupae to schools so kids can watch the metamorphosis. For the past 20 years he has traveled to Latin America to help with insect research. Kelly specializes in jeweled scarabs, named for their colorful metallic features and has helped identify many new species. Jeweled scarabs are now named for Price and his daughter.
