There is a very important meeting scheduled for Thursday January 4 regarding the merged union district. The meeting , required by the state, is the initial organizational meeting of the new merged district. The meeting is for all the voters of the affected towns: Hardwick, Woodbury, Greensboro and Stannard. The main point of the meeting is to appoint the "transitional board" for the new district, to elect officers to conduct business on behalf of the district, and to decide how new board members will be elected and how the new budget will be voted. Since this is the first official meeting of the new district, it is important for Woodbury to be well represented. The meeting will be at the Hardwick Elementary School gymnasium beginning at 6.
The Woodbury School Board held a second public meeting to discuss act 46 on Wednesday, December 12, with about 20 persons in attendance including two select board members. Most of the discussion focused on the articles of agreement that must be approved by the new merged district. Steven Murphy led the group through a review of the proposed articles and proposed changes. The main point of discussion was a proposal to change the article related to closing a school to require that the town in which the school is located vote in the affirmative to close the school. The draft articles prohibit closing a school for the first two years, but after that the decision can be made by the full electorate of the new district. There was also a lot of discussion about who owned the school, the town or the school district, with the prevailing belief was that the town owns the property and the building. Lawyers for the town and the school district are researching this question. The prevailing interest in the group was maintaining ownership of the property and building, including the wetland, by the town. Steven Murphy was elected to the school board and appointed to represent the board at the meeting to discuss articles, scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 20.
The school board plans to hold another public meeting in early January after the organizational meeting.
