Hi everyone!
My name is Hazel Macmillan and I am a senior at Harwood. This summer I have been interning at the ACLU of Vermont in Montpelier. I have been working on projects with the staff surrounding Constitutional rights, Criminal Justice, and the upcoming State Attorney election as part of our Smart Justice campaign. During this time I have planned a film screening of the movie 13th which links slavery and mass incarceration, race, prisons, and the criminal justice system. The film explains how the "criminal loophole" in the 13th amendment has led to the criminalization and mass incarceration of poor people and people of color. The text of the amendment being "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist."
Following the film, a panel of organizers and advocates working on issues of racial justice and criminal justice reform will tie together themes discussed in "13th" with Vermont-specific issues and the work being done to achieve justice in our state. The panelists will include members of Migrant Justice, addressing connections between immigration and the criminal justice system and an attorney and community organizer from the ACLU addressing policing, the power of prosecutors, and incarceration.
Vermont is not an exception to criminal injustice and mass incarceration! Bring your voice to this issue and engage with our community in self-reflection and analysis!
