Lake Champlain Water Quality
Presented by Angela Shambaugh of The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation
Lake Champlain is a gem. Lying between Vermont, New York and Quebec, it is home to many creatures and people. Roughly 580,000 people live and work in the Champlain Basin, mostly in Vermont. Thousands more visit each year to enjoy all that the lake has to offer. All this takes a toll on the lake and the quality of water flowing into it. One common pollutant, phosphorus, is connected to poor water clarity and the growth of algae. Vermont has a federally approved phosphorus management plan (the TMDL) to lower the amount of phosphorus reaching the lake and keep it healthy. Angela Shambaugh, with the VT DEC, will talk about land use, how it affects Lake Champlain, and the steps Vermont is taking to slow the flow of phosphorus into the lake.
Angela Shambaugh is an aquatic biologist in the Lakes and Ponds Program in the VT Agency of Natural Resources. She has more than 30 years of experience in the field of aquatic biology as a consultant, university research associate, and now with the State of Vermont. Angela currently oversees the Champlain monitoring program for Vermont and coordinates cyanobacteria monitoring across the basin. She works closely with federal, state, and local partners to improve and protect the health of Lake Champlain.
