Coming up Thursday on Goddard College Community Radio - a civil conversation about whether it's ever justifiable in a democracy to publicly shame or shun those whose work you disagree with—and, if so, what level of disagreement is necessary to justify those actions? I'm hoping for a lot of input from listeners.
9:00 - 10:00 am
When it became clear that the Trump administration was taking thousands of children from their parents before incarcerating them all indefinitely, opposition to the new policy included targeting top administration officials away from work. A restaurant owner asked White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave the restaurant. A Mexican restaurant visit by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was punctuated by a group of people chanting "Shame" and "End Texas concentration camps." These and other events of the past weeks have sparked a national conversation about shunning and shaming—when and whether they're justified, how effective they are at changing policy, and whether it's a good idea to reply in kind when the other side personalizes politics.
I'll talk about these issues with Vermont state senator Alison Clarkson (D-Windsor) and with listeners who call in. And we'll hear from Randy George of the Red Hen Baking Company in Middlesex, Vermont, about what it's like to own a business with a similar name to one that kicked out a senior White House official.
