City Council Preview - June 25 Meeting

Past event
Jun 25, 2018, 7 to 10 PM

Dear Neighbors,

This Monday, the City Council will convene its third of three meetings for the month of June. We will begin our evening at 6:15pm with a work session on contract negotiations and a proposal for the sale of Burlington Electric's shares of ownership in the Highgate Converter Station. There is an expected executive session given that this is a contract negotiation. The Council meeting will begin immediately after the work session.

The first item on our Council agenda is a presentation from Chapin Spencer, Director of DPW and Megan Moir, Manager of the Burlington Stormwater Program with an update on Wastewater and Stormwater Management. In view of recent wastewater concerns, this presentation will discuss what is being done to address recent issues and water quality.

On our deliberative agenda and the agenda for the meeting of the Council with the Mayor presiding are the annual appointments for citizens to serve on our City's Boards and Commissions. The Council formed a committee with a representative of the Mayor's office to review the applications for the City's boards and commissions. They held interviews of candidates and met a few days ago to arrive at a slate of candidates for these appointments. In most cases, the committee was able to agree on the appointments and advance a slate to the Council for this Monday evening. In a few cases, the committee could not find agreement; for these appointments, the Council will vote as a body on these individual commission and board seats.

The other five items of business are a resolution authorizing the City to proceed with planning, engineering and project administration for the reconstruction of City Hall Park. This resolution is the result of the work of a group formed by resolution to address the desire on the part of some residents to see more trees retained in the Park.

We are voting on two ordinances, one regarding the suspension and revocation of Certificate of Compliance and the other regarding changes to the fire ordinance. Some of the changes are related to the fees paid for alarm connection, technician work, monitoring and re-inspection fees for public buildings. The funds collected would create a reserve fund to pay for the upgrade to the Master Radio Call Box that monitors the fire alarm system in these buildings. This system transmits to a receiver in the fire department and the emergency communications center.

Our last two items are resolutions; one is the approval of residential electric vehicle rate tariff which will allow EV car owners a discounted rate if they charge their vehicles during evening hours and the other is the implementation of a market factor adjustment for the General Manager of Burlington Electric. This adjustment is being done to offer a competitive salary range as we begin our search for a new General Manager of BED.

You are always welcome to come to a Council meeting and speak on any topic you wish during public forum. This begins at a time certain of 7:30 at every Council meeting.
