Friday, June 1st @7:00pm @ South Hero Education Center Ron & Sue Phelps will share their knowledge and experiences in maintaining historic cemeteries in South Hero. They are part of a group called C.A.R.I.N.G. which was founded by Polly McBride in l984. They are joined by John and Alice Wells. Their work is concentrated in the oldest part of the town cemetery which is located from the Masonic Lodge to the second gate on South Street. The graves in the old area no longer have descendants supporting them. Some of them date from the 1700s. They decide which stones are most in need of repair or replacement. Jon volunteers to cut grass and put flags on the veterans' graves.

There are other cemeteries in town. One is located on Eagle Camp Road. Another is on the Lane property. Still another is off Buermann Lane on the way to the former Camp Greylock. The town cemetery was formerly between the Lincoln Inn and the Wells (formerly Thompson) house. The remains were dug up and reburied in the present cemetery. The stones were stacked in the horse sheds of the Masonic Lodge (formerly Methodist Meeting House) Let us hope they correctly matched the stones to the proper bodies.

Perhaps you know about other private cemeteries in town. Come, listen, look at pictures, and share. All are welcome. For easy access please enter through the doors in the brick portion of the building.
