Sicily: A Photographic Visit

Past event
May 20, 2018, 4 to 5:30 PM

Bob Van Degna will share his insights into the island of Sicily and his photographs of the Sicilian people in a presentation at Equinox Village, located at 49 Maple Street in Manchester Center, VT. The program is part of the Armchair Travel Series presented by Manchester Community Library and sponsored by Equinox Village.

Sicily is an island off the coast of Italy that has been conquered and influenced by many peoples over the course of history including the Greeks, the Romans, the Germans, and the Arabs. Each has left their mark on the Sicilian culture, making it a distinct experience in the Italian mosaic.

Van Degna has traveled three times to Sicily, the home of his maternal grandparents. He spent two weeks driving through much of Sicily in late 2016. He walked the streets of many of the large and small towns on the island and will convey one person's view of an island he loves.

Since shooting his first photographs with a Kodak Brownie in the late 1950's, Van Degna has had a fascination with photography. Raised in Schenectady, NY, he has traveled extensively documenting many cultures including China, Kenya, Europe, Latin America, Cuba and the US.

Van Dega was educated an engineer, but spent his career in finance. Since he retired, he has had more time to devote to his passion, photography. He and his wife, Mary-Anne split their time between Dorset, VT and Cave Creek, AZ. Van Degna has published three books: Helena Blues, City All Out, and Sicilia, and produced one documentary movie, Turning Pages.

The program is free and open to the public. Equinox Village is located at 49 Maple Street in Manchester Center, VT. For more info, call Cindy at 802-549-4577 or email events@mclvt.org.
