We are really looking forward to having two great musicians, Laura Risk and Nicholas Williams, come to town and play an early evening concert at our house. They will present an evening of music from Scottish and Québecois traditions, played on the fiddle, blackwood flute, accordion, and piano. The duo will also feature original compositions, and songs in English and French. Laura and Nicholas have played for over a decade for dances across North America, and have been praised for their subtle musicianship and their synergy, which they are now turning towards the concert stage.
The concert will be at 6pm with optional potluck appetizers/early dinner for anyone interested at 5pm. Reservations are highly encouraged. To reserve a space or for more information, please contact me at taloysen@aol.com or at 223-1234. Suggested donation to the musicians is $15-20, $10 for kids. Below is more information about the musicians.
Originally from California, Laura Risk grew up in the thriving San Francisco Scottish fiddle scene, learning her craft from master fiddler Alasdair Fraser. She has toured extensively with groups such as Cordelia's Dad, Triptych, and Greenfire, and is in demand as a teacher of Scottish and Québécois fiddle styles at camps and schools across North America.
"Laura Risk's fiddle is a revelation and achingly beautiful." - Ken Burns, Grammy-winning filmmaker
"Laura plays in a powerful, percussive style, with tight control and beautiful tone but bursting with energy and passion, turning reels into romps and slow airs into soul-searches." - Alex Monaghan, Living Tradition, Jan/Feb 2005

A multi-talented musician, Nicholas Williams plays wooden flutes, piano accordion, and piano. Originally from Ottawa, Nicholas studied world music, composition, and improvisation at York University in Toronto. Since then, his passion for the musical traditions of Québec, Scotland, Ireland, and Scandinavia have led him to perform, play for dances, and teach across North America and the UK as a member of the groups Genticorum, Crowfoot, the Alex Kehler+ Nicholas Williams duo, and with fiddler Laura Risk. His appreciation for musical traditions is accompanied by a propensity for innovation and musical exploration, and he has earned a reputation as a prolific composer and arranger.
