Harvesting & Appreciating the Gift of Japanese Knotweed

Past event
May 6, 2018, 4 to 6 PM

Join us for a 'by-donation' workshop, at the Rock Point Archdiocese, as we explore uses and utility of the infamous Japanese Knotweed. Knotweed holds a USDA designation as a non-native invasive plant, and is the focus of expensive (and often futile) removal efforts throughout it's new range. It is also a prime edible wild plant, loaded with nutrients and healing properties. With permission from the land managers at Rock Point, we will be digging roots and shoots from an approved area, both as a removal/containment project for Rock Point, and as a food and medicine-making event for ourselves.

Melanie Brotz, RD - a community herbalist and registered dietitian- will provide information on the culinary and healing qualities of Japanese Knotweed, including how to create a healing tincture from the root. We will have the opportunity to dig/harvest as from this site; please bring a full sized spade/shovel, and buckets and bags to take home your harvest.

Instructors:
Melanie Brotz (www.ediblewildplantsvermont.com), RD is a registered dietitian, nutrition educator, and community herbalist with over 15 years of experience as a field guide for herbal studies in Vermont. She is an avid wild foods enthusiast, and greatly enjoys sharing her love and knowledge of healing plants with others.

Thank you to the New England Grassroots Environment Fund for supporting our continued offering of these by-donation workshops. Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds!
