Environmental Preservation of the Ethan Allen Homestead(& Other Park Lands
The Winooski Valley Park District, a partner of the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum since the 1970s, is a hybrid 501(c)3 non-profit and incorporated Vermont Municipality whose mission is to plan, acquire, and manage lands and waters within the boundaries of its member municipalities in the Winooski River Valley for the purposes of conservation, preservation of natural areas, establishment of parks, and resource-based education and recreation. Created in 1972, today the WVPD manages 18 parks and natural areas with over 1,750+ acres of conserved land, over 60% of which are floodplains and wetlands. This presentation will discuss the natural and environmental history of WVPD parks, focusing on the Ethan Allen Homestead, and the importance of these conserved natural areas in relation to flood mitigation. This is especially important to learn about given the devastating floods of July 2023 & July 2024.
