Relocalizing VT Thursday: Safer Roads; Better Farming

Past event
Apr 26, 2018, 9 to 10:30 AM

Coming up Thursday on Goddard College Community Radio - innovative ways to make roads safer for bicyclists and pedestrians will be considered next week at a summit in White River Junction, and Rural Vermont's views on legislation affecting farmers and agriculture in the waning days of the biennium.

9:00 - 10:00 am
Roads designed for car traffic are often unsafe for pedestrians, bicyclists, wheelchair users, and others. Fortunately, a lot of new solutions are being tried. Many of them will be on the program for the Walk/Bike Summit next Friday, May 4, in White River Junction. We'll get a preview of the summit from organizers VTrans Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager Jon Kaplan and senior planner Rita Seto of the Two Rivers-Ottauqueechee Regional Commission; Kaplan will also explain why your community probably needs a plan for ADA-compliant streets. Plus Jason von Driesche of Local Motion will talk about effective, low-cost ways to make existing streets friendlier to walkers and cyclists.

Suspense is building about which bills will make it into law this biennium, as Vermont's legislative session is winding up. Andrea Stander of Rural Vermont will talk about some bills related to farming and agriculture and also preview this Friday's "Roadmap to the Statehouse" citizen lobbyist training day.
