SHHS Presents: Bootlegging Through the Islands: Past and Present
By Cathie Merrihew

Did you know that the term 'bootlegging' originated with the ladies of the Prohibition era? The curved glass pint jars of liquor were easily hidden in the boots of a lady crossing the Canadian border. In the U.S. the sale and consumption of alcohol was illegal from 1920 to 1933.

Did you also know that the islands were a major highway – over water and land – for bootleggers? Guess what? These islands are still a highway for illegal substances….
Do you want to hear the stories?

You are invited to the May 4th meeting of the South Hero Historical Society at Folsom School at 7:00pm. We are happy to welcome Cathie Merrihew, Doug Tudhope, John Lake, Malcolm Allen, and Sheriff Ray Allen to share their knowledge of this tumultuous time period in our local history.

The South Hero Historical Society will be offering programs this year on the first Friday of each month. Please check the Islander for confirmation of programs, meeting dates, and times. If you prefer not to climb the stairs, enter the building from the original front door in the brick half of the building.

Friday, May 4th, 2018 at 7:00pm at Folsom Educational Center--75 South Street!

See you there! All ages are welcome!
