The local Green Mountain Amnesty International Group is participating in Amnesty International’s 2017 Write for Rights campaign on Saturday morning, December 9, 2017 at the Hyde Park Library from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 pm. We encourage everyone to join us.
Every year to mark Human Rights Day on December 10, hundreds of thousands of people around the world send a letter or sign an online petition on behalf of someone they’ve never met, as part of Amnesty International’s Write for Rights. These messages help convince government officials to release people imprisoned for expressing their opinion (called “prisoners of conscience” by Amnesty), support human rights defenders, stop torture, commute death sentences, and end other human rights abuses.
Letter writing has always been at the heart of Amnesty International’s human rights campaigning, and 55+ years of human rights activism shows that it still works. But volume matters: the more participants in Write for Rights, the more letters and e-mail messages are generated, therefore increasing pressure and influence on government officials. This year Amnesty International wants to surpass 4 million actions and make a difference in the lives of all 10 cases selected for the 2017 Write for Rights campaign. Please consider spending an hour or two helping to accomplish this goal.
