Matewan Film Wednesday @ 5:45 pm at Hunger Mountain Co-op's Community Rm. (upstairs).

Terrific anti-racist working class film about miners unionizing the West Virginian coal mines. Workers faced dangerous working conditions, extreme poverty, and no representation on the job. Italian immigrants and Black workers were brought in to break the strike. In the end the Italians, Blacks and “Red Necks” banded together. Their efforts to unionize were met with harsh repression by the mine owners’ gun thugs, some local sheriff agencies, and the US Army. This led to the Battle of Blair Mountain perhaps the most militant action taken by workers in the United States in the 20th century. Discussion to follow. Hosted by Green Mountain Labor Council.
