To: Chase Brook Town Forest Users

The Fayston Natural Resources Committee is hosting a public forum on November 7th at 7:00 pm at the Robert Vasseur Town Hall at 866 North Fayston Road. In cooperation with the Mad River Path, Friends of the Mad River, the Mad River Riders, and the Catamount Trail Association, we will be presenting ideas for proposed changes to the bridge access and trail network on the town-owned parcel and welcome your input. Our goal with these changes is to simplify trail access; minimize user impact to the Chase Brook riparian zone; make the parcel equally accessible to all users including walkers, hikers, bikers, and skiers; and reduce the costs of trail and bridge maintenance.

We are proposing to make the upstream bridge at the McCollough Barn (across from the Fayston Elementary School) the only access to the parcel from German Flats Road. We would replace the old switch back trail on the south side of the bridge (which is steep and slippery, especially in winter) with a new side hill trail that cuts across the contour and accesses the Mad River Path up on the flat area above the downstream bridge. Once this new trail is constructed, we would remove the downstream bridge (if it hasn’t collapsed already) and remove the switch-back trail that it serves by removing some of the bank turns and filling in the rest with organic debris (branches, leaves, and fallen trees). We plan to restore the ecological function of the sensitive riparian zone to the south of the stream and between the two existing bridges, which has been compacted by over-use, by restoring vegetation where possible, adding organic debris, and prohibiting use. We also have been discussing options for bridge ramps and/or steps at the McCollough barn bridge.

We hope you can all attend.
