Location: Bayside Activity Center

This course is offered through a partnership with the Colchester Parks & Recreation Department. Pre-registration is required and can be done at the Parks & Rec office or online at http://bit.ly/2bRCgc8 (search under “Adult Programs”). Class is open to AARP Members and non-members. AARP Members should provide their membership number when registering.

The AARP Smart Driver Course covers defensive driving techniques and the normal changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time associated with aging. The course also provides practical techniques for adjusting to these changes to ensure the driver’s own safety and that of others on the road. During the course, participants learn about current rules of the road and how to operate their vehicles more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. Topics include: maintaining proper following distances, minimizing the effect of dangerous blind spots, limiting driver distractions (such as eating, smoking, and cell phone use), properly using safety belts, air bags, and all car features, the effects of medications on driving, maintaining physical flexibility, and monitoring the driving skills and capabilities of yourself and others. This course also reviews current national and Vermont traffic laws, and their impact upon older drivers. Maximum: 20 registrants.

Registration #120022-A: $15.00 (AARP Members)
Registration #120022-B: $20.00 (Non-AARP Members)
Instructor: Richard Smiles, AARP Volunteer
