To celebrate American Archives Month, the Vermont State Archives is pleased to present "Lawyers, Opium & Rails: Exploring Vermont's Early Courts, Drug Abuse & Railroads" by Vermont historian & author Gary Shattuck. Vermont history includes many obscure facts contained in its archives involving its first court system under New York jurisdiction, the state's first opium epidemic, and the creation of its railroad system in the mid 19th century. Through the use of records held by the Vermont State Archives, Shattuck will describe a fascinating pathway connecting these seemingly disparate events.
Doors open at 5:00pm for a special tour of the archives and exhibit, followed by the presentation at 6:00pm. This event is free and open to the public, drop-ins welcome any time. The Vermont State Archives is located at 1078 US-2 in Middlesex behind the State Police, exit 9. Questions?
