Susan O’Connell traveled to Ireland last April on a family heritage trip.
She brought her family to castles, estate houses, and ringforts, tromped on old Mass Paths and hiked into the mountains, attempting to learn more about the O’Connell family in Ireland’s County Kerry.
On Sunday, October 1 at 7PM, Susan will share photos and stories from her trip and from her family history. From the Great Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator of Ireland, to the murkier history of the less well known Daniel O’Connell, Fenian Agitator, she will share stories of the O’Connells of Ballycarberry Castle to midnight escapes from British rule. Her photos will bring to light the rugged beauty of the remote “Kingdom of Kerry” on the western edge of Europe, and highlight some beautiful gardens that take advantage of the amazingly temperate climate.
If the photos and stories have whetted your appetite to experience this unique corner of the world for yourself, stay on for a talk at 8PM about the library’s fundraising trip in September 2018. Librarian Susan O’Connell will lead a group to the best of the places she has discovered on her travels, and share context for the historical and natural sights that participants will experience. This tour, limited to seven participants, will focus on the cultural highlights and hidden gems in the Kingdom of Kerry. A portion of the funds from this tour will support the Craftsbury Public Library.
