The Southern Front in the Revolutionary War

Sep 12, 2017, 7 to 9 PM

Join the Charlotte Historical Society at the Charlotte Library on Tuesday, September 12 at 7:00 PM to learn more about the Southern front in the Revolutionary War.

When we think of the Revolutionary War, normally it involves the Northern front: Lexington and Concord; Forts Ticonderoga and Crown Point; Mount Independence; Bennington; Saratoga; or even the Christmas attack on Trenton and Princeton where George Washington led the army. Fewer are aware of actions on the Southern front, which was equally important. David Ryan will share information about the economic importance of 18th century Charleston, SC, and highlight some key players in the revolution from Charleston--especially Thomas Heyward, Jr., the first owner of the Heyward-Washington House. Heyward was one of the four signers of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina, and figured prominently in the Revolutionary War. David will also touch on the role/plight of the Loyalists during this period. This is a unique opportunity to hear a perspective of the Revolution that is rarely discussed. This program should be of interest to adults who wish to have a more complete picture of our Revolution, as well as students who are studying U.S. history this fall.

David Ryan is a highly trained guide/interpreter/docent who works at the Shelburne Museum during the summer months, and volunteers during the winter months at the Charleston (SC) Museum, which owns two historic houses: the Joseph Manigault House (1803); and the Heyward-Washington House (1772).
